System Operator for Northern Ireland
The System Operator for Northern Ireland (SONI) is the independent electricity transmission system operator responsible for managing the electricity grid and overseeing the balance of supply and demand in real time for Northern Ireland. SONI plans for the future of the grid, supports the integration of renewable energy, and provides expert advice to government and regulatory bodies on energy policy while operating independently from ownership of generation or infrastructure assets.
In terms of HVDC activities, SONI works closely with partners to integrate high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology into the grid, particularly in relation to cross-border interconnectors and enhancing grid stability and flexibility as part of Northern Ireland's energy transition.
