About
Sumitomo Electric
Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. is a global manufacturer of high voltage cables with a history dating back to 1921 when they installed the world's longest submarine cable at that time. The company has manufactured and installed over 6,000km of submarine cables and leads in high voltage XLPE cable development for both AC and DC applications.
In the HVDC sector, Sumitomo Electric has developed and commercialized 500kV MI and 400kV XLPE cable systems, with their HVDC XLPE cable enabling polarity reversal operations and higher operational conductor temperatures (90°C). In 2019, they successfully commissioned the world's first DC High Voltage XLPE Cable system (400kV) in the UK-Belgium Link, and recently secured an HVDC cable framework contract from National Grid UK to deliver future HVDC subsea power cables projects.
