About
IFA 1 & 2
IFA 1 and IFA 2 are subsea electrical interconnectors linking the electricity grids of the United Kingdom and France. IFA 1 was the original link commissioned in 1986, while IFA 2, commissioned in 2021, is the second connection developed collaboratively between National Grid and the French transmission system operator RTE, each facilitating secure and affordable electricity exchange between the two countries.
Both IFA 1 and IFA 2 operate using high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, with IFA 2 being a 1,000 MW HVDC interconnector spanning 204 km beneath the English Channel, enabling efficient transfer of clean energy between the British and French transmission networks.
