Hydroelectrica de Cahora Bassa
Hydroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) operates the Cahora Bassa Dam, the largest hydroelectric power plant in southern Africa, located in Tete province on the Zambezi River. The company manages a 2,060 MW hydropower facility and is majority-owned by the Mozambican state, with additional shares held by Portuguese and Mozambican entities.
HCB plays a critical role in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, exporting most of its generated electricity to South Africa through a 1,800 km HVDC system that includes converter stations at Songo (Mozambique) and Apollo (South Africa), utilizing dedicated high-voltage lines for efficient long-distance power delivery.
