EGL 2

Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) is a major UK energy infrastructure project consisting of a 505 km subsea electricity transmission cable connecting Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, to Drax in North Yorkshire, England. Developed as a joint venture between SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission, EGL2 represents the largest single investment in the UK’s transmission network and will facilitate the transfer of power—primarily from offshore wind—between Scotland and England, enhancing the security, resilience, and flexibility of the UK electricity system.

EGL2 specifically utilizes high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, featuring a 2-gigawatt subsea cable capable of powering two million homes, and will be the longest HVDC subsea cable in the UK when completed. Construction began following final approval in 2024, with the project expected to be operational by 2029.
