Eastern Green Link 1
Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) is a joint venture between SP Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission to build a 196km long, two-gigawatt high voltage direct current electrical connection between Torness in East Lothian, Scotland and Hawthorn Pit in County Durham. Construction on this £2.5 billion project is scheduled to start in March 2025, with the aim to be fully operational by 2029, delivering enough electricity for two million homes.
As an HVDC link, EGL1 functions like an electricity superhighway, designed to unlock Scotland's renewable energy reserves by transporting clean energy over long distances. The project includes predominantly undersea cables with about 20km of underground cables, and features a multi-directional design that will increase the resilience and stability of the UK's transmission networks.
