Champlain Hudson Power Express
The Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) is an innovative renewable power transmission project that will deliver clean hydroelectric energy from Quebec to New York City, spanning nearly 339 miles from the US-Canadian border and expected to supply 20% of New York City's electricity when fully operational in 2026.
The project utilizes high-voltage direct current (HVDC) energy transmission cable technology that transmits power more efficiently than alternating current over long distances, with cables being installed underground and underwater from Lake Champlain to a Converter Station in Astoria, Queens, where the power will be converted to AC for distribution into New York City's energy grid.
