About
New York Independent System Operator (NYISO)
NYISO is a non-profit organization responsible for operating New York's electric grid and managing competitive wholesale electricity markets across the state. It oversees the reliable operation of approximately 11,000 miles of high-voltage transmission, conducts long-term system planning, and ensures fair and transparent access to the grid for diverse market participants.
NYISO is involved with the integration and operation of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines, which help address transmission constraints and enhance reliability—particularly in regions with heavy congestion like New York City and Long Island. These HVDC projects are a key tool in NYISO’s efforts to efficiently deliver clean energy and maintain system reliability amid changing supply and demand patterns.
