Eskom is South Africa's largest state-owned electricity utility and the biggest producer of electricity in Africa, generating about 95% of the country's electricity and supplying around 45% of the electricity used across the continent. In the field of HVDC, Eskom has developed and operates major high-voltage direct current transmission systems, notably facilitating the long-distance transfer of large amounts of power within South Africa and across its borders.
