The Yongren-Funing HVDC project is a significant high-voltage direct current transmission system in China. It is a ±500 kV HVDC transmission line that connects Yongren County in Chuxiong City to Funing County in Wenshan City, both located in Yunnan Province. This project is notable for being the first HVDC system in China where both the sending and receiving ends are situated within the same province.

The transmission line spans a distance of 566 km, making it an important infrastructure for power transmission in the region. Construction of the project began in 2015, and it was successfully commissioned in 2016. The Yongren-Funing HVDC line is operated by China Southern Power Grid Co Ltd (CSG), a major electric utility company in China.

Technical Specifications

The Yongren-Funing HVDC project has a power transmission capacity of 3000 MW, which significantly enhances the power supply and grid stability in the region.

Technical Challenges and Solutions

One of the technical challenges addressed in this project is the optimization of the DC line fault recovery sequence. Research has been conducted to improve the Wide Frequency Power Differential Logic (WFPDL) strategy for fault detection and recovery. This optimization aims to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the transmission system.

The project also incorporates advanced control and protection systems. These systems are designed with redundancy to ensure high reliability and availability of the HVDC link. The control systems manage various aspects of the transmission, including power flow, voltage levels, and fault response.

Harmonic Management

Harmonic management is another important technical aspect of the Yongren-Funing HVDC project. Studies have shown the presence of specific harmonic resonances in the system, particularly 13th and 23rd series harmonics at the Yongren rectifier station and 11th series resonance at the Funing inverter station. Managing these harmonics is essential for maintaining power quality and preventing equipment damage.
