The Rivera HVDC Back-to-back station is located south of Rivera, Uruguay. It was constructed by Areva and inaugurated in 2000.

Technical Specifications

The primary function of the Rivera HVDC Back-to-back station is to convert power between the grids of Uruguay and Brazil, which operate at different frequencies. The station operates with a DC voltage of 20 kV and has a power rating of 70 MW.

Grid Connection

The Rivera HVDC Back-to-back station is integrated into Uruguay's power grid through a short single-circuit 150 kV transmission line. This line connects the station to the Rivera substation. This connection facilitates the transfer of power between the HVDC station and the broader Uruguayan electrical network.

As this interconnection does not fit today's requirement, a second interconnection, Melo HVDC Back-to-back station was built.
