Lingzhou-Shaoxing (灵绍线)

The Lingzhou-Shaoxing HVDC Line is an 800kV overhead transmission line spanning 1720km from Lingzhou, Henan, to Shaoxing, Zhejiang, in China. Commissioned in 2016 after construction began in 2014, this project is operated by the State Grid Corporation of China.

This HVDC line is capable of transmitting up to 8000 MW of power, making it a significant component of China's power infrastructure. The project utilizes ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) technology, which allows for efficient long-distance power transmission.

One notable aspect of the Lingzhou-Shaoxing HVDC project is that it was the first to connect to 750 kV power grids on the rectifier side. This connection presented unique challenges during the commissioning phase, as the 750 kV bus voltage at the Lingzhou side experienced larger fluctuations due to the supporting power generator not being in production at the time.

The project's commissioning test program was carefully designed to address these characteristics. It included system test aims, conditions of both AC and DC systems, test contents and operation steps, measurement signals, acceptable criteria for test results, and safety precautions.

From an economic perspective, the Lingzhou-Shaoxing HVDC project cost approximately 19.5 billion yuan. This cost is comparable to other large-scale HVDC projects in China, reflecting the substantial investment required for such advanced power transmission infrastructure.

The use of HVDC technology in this project offers several advantages over traditional AC transmission. These include lower transmission losses over long distances, the ability to connect asynchronous grids, and improved power flow control. Such benefits are particularly important for China, given its vast geography and the disparity between energy production centers and consumption hubs.
